JUS NFL BLOG 9/28: PURDY WANTS HIS RESPECT. 49ERS ARE 3-0.
The 49ers are 3-0.
Three games.
Three wins.
And Brock Purdy is apparently going to spend another season forcing people to explain why the quarterback who keeps winning football games somehow isn’t one of the best quarterbacks in football.
Dave Portnoy.
You ready to redo that Top 10 quarterbacks list yet?
Because Purdy is making this increasingly uncomfortable.
San Francisco beat Arizona 36-30 Sunday, and yes, the Cardinals made it interesting in the second half.
A little too interesting.
The 49ers had built a 23-6 lead before Arizona started clawing its way back into the game.
By late in the fourth quarter, it was suddenly 29-27.
Two-point game.
Cardinals have momentum.
49ers need a drive.
And Purdy basically said:
Fine.
THE DRIVE
This is the part of the game that should start changing the way people talk about Brock Purdy.
San Francisco got the ball at its own 35 with under three minutes left.
Arizona needed one stop.
Instead, the 49ers marched right down the field.
Christian McCaffrey picked up the tough yards.
Then Purdy dropped back, didn’t see what he wanted, found a hole and took off.
Not five yards.
Not ten.
Forty-five yards.
Touchdown.
Game basically over.
Except apparently George Kittle committed holding right before Purdy reached the end zone.
Did he?
The officials said yes.
Kittle said he disagreed.
JUS has reviewed the situation and reached its own completely unbiased conclusion:
Weak call.
So the touchdown comes back.
Fine.
What happens next?
Two plays later Purdy throws a 20-yard touchdown pass to Kittle anyway.
That’s almost better.
You take away Purdy’s spectacular touchdown run because of a questionable holding call on Kittle, so Purdy just throws a touchdown to Kittle instead.
Put that one in the refs’ face.
All the penalty really accomplished was forcing Arizona to use more time before the 49ers scored anyway.
San Francisco went up 36-27.
Arizona kicked a late field goal.
Final:
49ers 36. Cardinals 30.
The Niners are 3-0.
PURDY BETTER START GETTING SOME RESPECT
Sunday:
15-of-27.
297 passing yards.
Four touchdown passes.
Zero interceptions.
He also ran for 34 official yards, with that 45-yard touchdown erased by the penalty.
Through three games, Purdy has 789 passing yards, nine touchdowns and one interception.
And here’s another fairly important number:
Zero sacks.
Purdy has not been sacked through three games.
That’s the offensive line doing its job.
That’s Purdy getting rid of the ball.
That’s the entire offense functioning.
Whatever explanation people still want to use for why Brock Purdy isn’t an elite NFL quarterback, they’re going to need to update it.
Because the current version isn’t working.
KITTLE HAD HIMSELF A DAY
George Kittle finished with six catches, 82 yards and two touchdowns.
Apparently it was also George Kittle bobblehead day at Levi’s Stadium.
So 80,000 people got a tiny plastic George Kittle and then watched the actual George Kittle catch two touchdowns.
Pretty efficient marketing.
The second touchdown was the one that ended Arizona’s comeback hopes.
And let’s give the Cardinals some credit.
They could have folded at 23-6.
They didn’t.
They ran 81 offensive plays, controlled the ball for nearly 39 minutes and made the 49ers earn the win.
But earning the win is exactly what San Francisco did.
That’s what good teams do.
THE MOST JACKED UP STUFF FROM THE REST OF SUNDAY
THE PATRIOTS LOST 35-6 WHILE BASICALLY MATCHING JACKSONVILLE IN YARDS
New England had 317 total yards.
Jacksonville had 315.
Final score?
Jaguars 35. Patriots 6.
How?
Three Patriots turnovers.
Drake Maye threw two interceptions.
Jacksonville didn’t exactly move the ball like the 1999 Rams. They just kept getting gifts and cashing them in.
Same yardage.
Twenty-nine-point loss.
That is extremely Jacked Up.
SEATTLE HAD 437 YARDS AND LOST TO A TEAM WITH 258
This might be even better.
Seattle outgained Washington 437-258.
Sam Darnold threw for 379 yards and four touchdowns.
Seattle still lost 33-31.
Why?
Three turnovers.
Including a fourth-quarter interception that Washington returned for a touchdown.
Nothing like gaining almost 180 more yards than the other team and still losing.
Very Jacked.
THE RAMS BLEW A 16-0 HALFTIME LEAD
The Rams went into halftime in Denver up 16-0.
Game under control.
Then Denver scored 16 in the third quarter.
Then everything got weird.
Matthew Stafford threw a pick-six with about five minutes left.
The Rams came back and retook the lead.
Then Bo Nix scored with under a minute left.
Then Stafford drove Los Angeles all the way down to the Denver 14 with seconds remaining.
One final shot.
Stafford throws into the end zone.
Intercepted.
Broncos win 30-26.
The Rams had 482 yards to Denver’s 257 and still lost.
That is a very strong Sunday for teams gaining way more yards than their opponents and finding creative ways to lose anyway.
ZAK IS STILL ROLLING SOMEHOW
Miami is now 0-3 after losing 24-10 to Kansas City.
So our friend Zak’s season motto remains fully operational.
I’ll keep it rolling somehow.
At this point, it might actually need to go on the official Dolphins uniforms.
The 49ers are 3-0.
Purdy has nine touchdowns and one interception.
Nobody has sacked him.
Arizona made it interesting.
San Francisco answered.
And Dave Portnoy may want to find a pencil and start working on Version 2 of that quarterback list.
Football is Jacked Up.
The 49ers are not.
