Love them or hate them, they’re still the team everyone in the National League is chasing. They’re free to spend whatever they want. Good for them.
We’re free to root for somebody to finally knock them off.
That’s our official position.
THE PADRES ANSWERED THE BELL
After dropping Thursday night’s opener to the Giants, the Padres came back with exactly the response they needed.
Padres 7, Giants 0.
No panic.
No excuses.
Just great pitching, timely hitting, and a reminder that this team is still very much in the Wild Card race.
Now comes the important part…
Win the series.
If the Padres want to make October interesting, they can’t settle for splitting series. Keep stacking wins.
THE GIANTS AREN’T GOING AWAY
The Giants won the opener.
The Padres answered.
Now we get the rubber match.
As someone who grew up a Giants fan, we’d love to see San Francisco make a run.
As someone who wants an exciting NL West…
We’d love to see the Padres make one too.
Because the more teams chasing the Dodgers, the better baseball gets.

Shohei Ohtani — Dodgers
Still recovering as the Dodgers carefully manage his return to pitching. Every NL West team is hoping that timetable takes a little longer.
Blake Snell — Dodgers
Progressing toward a return. The Dodgers don’t need another frontline arm… which is exactly why they’re trying to get one anyway.
Tyler Glasnow — Dodgers
Still working back. If he and Snell return healthy, the Dodgers’ rotation becomes even tougher.
Harrison Bader — Giants
Still sidelined after another setback. The Giants could use his veteran presence down the stretch.
THE UNJACKED LIST
Padres
A dominant 7-0 win over the Giants put them right back on track.
Robbie Ray — Giants
Despite the shutout loss Friday, Ray continues to pitch some outstanding baseball and has been one of the Giants’ biggest bright spots.
Fernando Tatis Jr.
Another spark for the Padres offense as San Diego looks to build another winning streak.
