Jacked Up Highlights — June 22, 2026
It’s Monday. Sports don’t take days off and neither do we. Here’s everything that’s jacked up in the sports world today.
WORLD CUP 2026 — THE INJURY WARD IS FULL
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the biggest in history — 48 teams, 104 games, three countries — and it’s already a walking injury report.
Brazil’s Raphinha went down with a hamstring injury against Haiti and his World Cup return is uncertain. Brazil is already without Estêvão (hamstring) and Wesley (injury against Egypt). Carlo Ancelotti is managing a roster that looks like a hospital waiting room.
Netherlands lost Jurriën Timber — the 24-year-old Arsenal defender couldn’t recover from a groin injury in time. The Dutch said he “has not recovered sufficiently to take part in the World Cup in a medically responsible manner.” That’s a brutal way to find out your summer is over.
Germany recalled 40-year-old Manuel Neuer as starting goalkeeper because their first choice Marc-André ter Stegen has been plagued by injuries all season including a devastating hamstring tear. A 40-year-old keeper starting a World Cup in 2026. That’s jacked up.
Real Madrid’s Rodrygo tore his ACL and meniscus in March and is likely done for the rest of 2026. Gone before the tournament even started.
Meanwhile Lionel Messi came off the bench against Iceland, converted a penalty, and reminded everyone he is still very much alive. That man is built different.
MLB — 601 PLAYERS ON THE INJURED LIST
That’s not a typo. The 2026 MLB injury report has now reached 601 players across all 30 teams — a new high for the season. Baseball is jacked up from top to bottom right now.
The biggest name: Bobby Witt Jr. left the Royals’ June 18 game with right knee discomfort and has a Grade 1 MCL sprain. He gets reevaluated today. Kansas City holds its breath.
Mike Trout is on the 10-day IL with a right hamstring strain. Again. The greatest player of his generation can’t stay healthy and it’s genuinely sad at this point.
The Toronto Blue Jays lead all of baseball with a severity score of 105 and a league-high 17 players on the 60-Day IL. Seventeen. That’s not a roster, that’s a casualty list.
On the bright side — the Phillies are on fire. Kyle Schwarber hit three home runs Saturday, followed it up with another blast Sunday, and leads MLB in home runs. Bryce Harper is doing Bryce Harper things. Zack Wheeler is locking it down on the mound. The Phillies took down the Mets on Sunday Night Baseball 6-2 and they’re looking like the real deal right now.
BOTTOM LINE
Between the World Cup injury parade and MLB’s record IL numbers, the sports world is very much jacked up right now. We’re covering all of it.
